A Cult Business Following!

Well, my last posting (suggesting that, for the good of UK plc, some employment laws should be abolished) caused quite quite a stir! Personnel Today magazine picked up on it and reported that I have gained a “cult business following”! Blimey! Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing?

The magazine then ran an on-line poll asking its readers if they agreed with my suggestions. Many did. Quite right too.

Personnel Today then asked me to write a 650 word article with a bit more detail about which laws we should abolish. Click here to read it: http://www.elliswhittam.com/public/control.php?_path=/381/388/390&_command=/DISPLAY/60/80/What do you think?

The Government was then forced to defend unfair dismissal law in the face of “increasing calls for the legislation to be scrapped”. No prizes for guessing its position! Click here to read what the Government had to say:

Perhaps if we can keep the momentum going we will force the introduction of more employer friendly employment laws? Or is that naïve and wishful thinking?

I’ll copy this posting to both the Blair and Cameron camps and see if they dare to comment. Watch this space.

It a really hard choice. One the one hand I think that we need to protect employees form being exploited - but, as a business owner myself, I can see that we are held back by red tape and procedural employment laws. I agree that with good legal advice we seem to be able to do what we want (but it sometimes takes a while - too long normally) which I supoose begs the question why bother having to jump through the hoops in the first place. I am sure that my business would be more dynamic, responsive and successful (and probably employ more people) if I did not have to follow strict employment laws!

If only!! I have just had to spend two weeks and God knows how much on solicitors costs to get the procedure rigfht before sacking a manager for fighting. Mad!

I agree. I am an HR consultant and I am always having to advise my clients on formal disciplinary laws even for minor offences. It should be simplified and less formal.

Formal procedures only complicate things and makes everyone involved feel more stressed. So… good for you. DTI is now looking at reforming the procedures.
